It is with sadness and a heavy heart I tell you that m y husband Daumants Grants brilliant
architect and intense alcoholic commoitted Suicide by shooting himself through tthe neck
and head with a shotgunLynn andmauruce came over as did thepolice and emergency
medidcall teams !!! He used a short shotgun and one bullet...'i thought he had fallen on
something, but when I saw his flashlite, there ewas a neck wound, and the police said the
bullet did extensive damage to his brain,,, So gone is a very brilliant Architect, friend andhusband.
Alcohol is a very insidious adduction took away my mother at 53They both chose that slow death,
but Daumants chose the quick way out... He did not believe in the Almighty or heaven or anything...
. Perhaps he will meet his Mothher in Heaven, though he doesn't believe! .... Nothing I could do would
help him stop alcohol.... His "friends fron[m Disney and Universal were non existant and he spent hi
s days waiting ffor anything he never finished the house to the point it is enclosed.... Just send positiv
energies his was, hoping he has found peace!!! .Alcohol addiction is a horrendous addiction and
leaves the family with piles of heart cinders !!!

JUST DISCOVERED THE STEINWAY MAURICE GAVE ME A FEW YEARS AGO is an "A3"6'4 3/4' Created in 1913!!!!
In perusing information about Steinways, my FAVORITE Piano manufacturer {US made in Astoria LI] last night, I remeasured my second piano.... Turns out it is NOT an "M" but a very rare "A3" and weighs in at 645 pounds.... Due to being made of solid Ebony. I am so proud of my Steinways, and thankful to my Son.
My other Steinway at one time belonged tomy Dear Friend, the great Concert Pianist William Kapell, and upon his untimely tragic death in a commercial airliner crash returning from a stopover in Hawaii after his exhausting tour in Australia... The airliner plowed into a mountainside near Half Moon Bay just a few miles from the San Fransisco Airport....
I wound up with his piano, rather one of his pianos... He had three in his Studio [actually his brownstone home he shared with Mama and Papa Kapell] on east 94th Street... Two were Concert "D"s 8'11" the third and mine is a Concert "B" 6'11"... with very Stiff action. And of course this is my preferred piano BECAUSE of the very stiff action... translating to more powerful hands. Also, as it turns out translating to Dupuytrens syndrome, a thickening of the tendons in the hands, due to extensive practice through the years... Though general MDs will encourage you to have surgery, you will be incapacitated for a year, and will NEVER play again because of the scar tissue in the palms in those tendons. It is treated be a Chirohealer who uses the Graston Tecnic,thus releasing the tangled tendons, rendering my hands very free and excellent tecnic wise. Thank you Dr. David Simmons of Arcadia...
And as you see... my Kapell piano has a excellent companion and almost the same size! I thank Maurice so much for this treasure.
And YES YES YES I practice Piano tecnic every day.. sometimes playing well into the late night. I rotate things.... one day are the Brahms 51 exerscises as chosen for me by my Great Master in NY Robert Goldsand.... He chose perhaps 45 of those 51.... Then I do all scales in DOUBLE Thirds.... the Liszt fingerings.
You see Mr Goldsand Studied with Moritz Rosenthal, who was a favored pupil of Franz Liszt! I am proud of studying with Goldsand, as I have an almost direct lineage to Liszt's approach to tecnic! The next Day, I delve into the Lechetizsky Method, and afterward, several Chopin Etudes,sometimes changing their keys and jazz repertoire and changes. The Third Day will be classical repertoire and things my group will use in concert, plus a return to intense scales in double thirds, and sixths.
From time to time I take a bit of time away from my Steinways...
My whole life has been devoted to music. I am truly blessed to have found what I really loved early in life! Hugs, I hope YOU are so blessed, too, and IN the ARTS! KissKiss

The next concert of the Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz LA"5th Stream" Series will happen on Monday November 7th, 2011 at the Donald Wright Auditorium, 285 East Walnut[ the Historin Pasadena Main Library Chamber Music Concert Hall'
Fordham has a quartet, She plays a Steinway "D" concert Grand; Nate Light plays Contrabass;Rochelle Coatney plays Latin and World Percussion, and Miles Senzaki plays Percussion and Drums.
The group is hip, elegant, knowing,arty, and the Music is highly thought out, yet totally improvised. Fifth stream is a combination-fusion of Jazz-Classical and Avant Garde, and is very virtuosic!
Fordham Studied Jazz in NY with Lennie Tristano,Milt Jackson, Gerry Mulligan, and classical Piano with Robert Goldsand, Ania Dorfman, Josef Raieff, Dorothea La Follette, Beveridge Webster, Rosinna Lhevine, composition with Hall Overton, MX Mitacek[ Spud Murphy's Equal Interval System
The venues are Historic, comfortable... and informal. Admission is complimentary. The concert starts at 6:30 and ends at 9PM following the hours at the Hall when we can present our Art.

The Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz:We just added the final concert for the 2010-2011 season for July 27th st 630PM at the Donald Wright Auditorium, 285 East Walnut inside the Pasadena Main Library, in itself is a gorgeous Historic Pasadena Building. The venue is Hip, Elegant and informal... Arts and Crafts Style. Admission is free , and the music emphazises virtuosity and lush improvisations.
We are in our 7th year of preaenting concerts to the Public and to carry on the tradition of the Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz Genre.[Fifth Stream] Look forward to seeing you!

I am really happy with the development of the sound and syncronicity with my Trio Players, Charlie Domingo, contrabass, and Timm Boatman. Things are together in a great way, and in the way I recognise from all the great Trios I have had over a lifetime! We have a meeting of the minds over volume, Chamber Music basics such as unselfconscious eye contact, and the subtle CM communication between players that make for an inspired performance. And of course this makes for a better experience for the audience.
BTW, I do not expect a large audience next concert due to having my email mailing list hacked into and ultimately deleted. This was a ridiculous thing to go through, but I really had to go through my invitees and redo who gets to stay and who should be released, so in a sense, it was a good thing.. It's a shame, as I pay for the venue, publicity, and my players, charging nothing for the concerts and to have an idiot self glorifying hacker destroy that is lucicrous. He even left a cartoon of a bug with 2 enormous tears rolling down it's cheeks, and the blurb"Are you crying yet?" Really a sick, sadistic misanthrope! And NO I did NOT cry over this yet new life experience!

The Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz La Quartet will present their opening of the 09-10 "New Orbits" Concert Series on Sunday, October 18 at 7:30 PM at the South Pasadena Main Library Concert Hall, 1115 El Centro, South Pasadena.
Suezenne Fordham , founder, Producer,Pianist and Leader of SFCJLA has long collaborated with The Littleton Brothhers, Don[Drums, Exotic Percussion]; and Jeff[ Contrabass. Rounding out the Quartet is Latin-Jazz Percussionist Rochelle Coatney. Ensemble plays Tibetan Percussion, for a totally unique sound. The group is acoustic . The sound is easily accessable, Muses being Monk, Messian, evans and Chouchan. It is Classical-Fusion _Jazz... Intimate virtuostic and passionate, at times delving into the Argentine Nuevo Tango as a source of inspiration.

CLOSING OF FIELDS PIANOS POSING MAJOR PROBLEMS FOR THE SERIES "SUEZENNE FORDHAM CHAMBER JAZZ LA "New Orbits"

A month or so ago I recieved an urgrnt email from our Musical home of three years, Fields Pianos in est LAhome of my favorite Pisno ths Steinway, esp the Concert Grands, and friends of many NewYork Steinway Artists for may years., They were closing their doors forever, but perhaps would be able to accomodate three more of SFCJLA's Concerts for the 08-09 season. [eight left in all.].. The next concert was a disaster, which was the next night. I turned my cell off for the first half of the concert, and there were only three people in the sudience...granted real music lovers, but I go to great expense to present these concerts free to the public...and when I turned in my cell at intermission there were many messages from poeple who couldn't find Steinway Hall in the Dark[ it is down three flights in the parking structure..... and so people either couldn't find it OR were frightened...

At first I thought I would go ahead with the Janusry 8th concert with my quartet, but have thought better about it and for the first time I am cancelling the remainder of my concerts there. I am very thankful for the friendship and courtesies that Field's Pianos afforded us, but I am faced with finding a new, attractive venue with superb Steinway Concert Grands... It is my understanding their Orange County store will still be open, and will still be home to Steinway there, but that is a very ong way from here..

I thank My Ida, the Steinway Artist's rep, and Sherree, AND the geniuses at the Steinway Factory in Queens NY for their devotion to the creation of these extraordinary concert Instruments and am eternally grateful to have been a part of their Family in West LA.
Sigh, it's tough being a leader.

As my friend Myrna Daniels says, "Hang in there." More later. I have yet to tell my players that I am cancelling the remainder of the Steinway Hall concerts and that our next concert is in South Pasadena on February 15th at the South Pasadena library at 7 30 PM in the Main Concert Hall 1115 El Centro. 818 371 7735

"The Making of the STEINWAY L1037"

A very stunning Event happened last Tuesday at Fields Pianos, West LA.By invitation only there was a special showing of the Documentary- Movie by Ben Niles on the creation of concert "D" Steinway L1037... from the cutting of the timber in Alaska to it's completion and use in performance at Zankel Hall 'neath Carnegie Hall in New York. [ across the street from the georgeous Steinway Showroom on Fifty Seventh Street.]

The video was shot from in and around the Steinway factory in Astoria, across the East River from Manhatten. The true heroes of the story are the devoted Artians from many different cultural backgrounds, most of whom have been with the Steinway Company all of their working lives. There is nothing pretentious about these men and women, and their total devotion to the Art of creating these wonders, arguably the finest, most sensitive, expressive and best made in the entire world.

In these days of cutting corners in manufacturing of other Fine instruments, [pianos] I am awestruck that Steinway does all of their work themselves, in the USA. The only thing that is done outside of their Astoria factory are some Black Keys that are made at a very small factory in Iowa. That factory is owned by Steinway and Sons.

The detail that goes into this labor of love is heart rending. All of my life in New York, I had friends who were Steinway Artists... William Kapell, Robert Goldsand, Josef Raieff, Ania Dorfman, Wanda
Landowska, to name a few,

Vladimir Horowitz lived just a few doors from William Kapell on East 94th Street and a few doors in the other direction was Mme Ania Dorfman... Sometimes when visiting Willie, I could hear my teacher Mme Dorfman practising, and walk a bit past Willies house, and hear the great Horowitz creating thunderous clouds of tone, and exuding genius on his fantastic Steinway. Steinway provided him with this very special piano, adjusted to Horowitz' specifications.

He traveled on tour with this instrument, along with Steinway's Master Tecnician to care for the instrument. It was this unique partnership, Horowitz, Steinway and Sons NY and his Master Tecnician that allowed Horowitz to electrify audiences the world over, much the same as Liszt had done some years earlier. And he played this wonderful instrument when he finally returned to his beloved Russia on one of his final tours, and final recordings recorded in Moscow

His Steinway Tecnician was at his side for all the tours, to attend to anything that might need adjusting, perhaps a string that would need a gentle turn of the tuning wrench or to be replaced, as Horowitz was a powerful Concert Artist. They were sponsored by Steinway and Sons NY, and Horowitz never strayed from their fold. [I was fortunate enough to play and record on that very instrument when it was on it's last tour in LA a few months ago. An experience I will cherish all of my life.]

All of this is to say there are several reasons that I was so very interested in this video... It was exactly the most perfect tribute to the most perfect instruments that I, and my beloved ones could ever hope for.

At a recent NAMM Show, I ran to see the "Fine" pianos.. and played all three major Brands of concert grands "D"s... and was numbed that their actions were exactly the same, therefore one 8"11 sounded exactly the same as other 8'11 s. [from different manufacturers]

Used to be that each of those pianos was very different from each other. I must add that Steinway was not present at the Namm show. I would prefer to think it was because Steinway is "above" that sort of thing. An unsuspecting salesman unwittingly let it slip that the Keyboards and Actions of those other pianos were indeed made by the Renner Company which is in CHINA!!! Then shipped to Europe, and the US... So all of that money is actually for the glitzy furniture!!! Gasp!.

Sooo when I saw this documentary months ago [I bought it as soon as it came out] I was delirious with joy, and proud that my illustrious friends had encouraged me in the love of those magnificent instruments. Seeing it again with a few Steinway officianados was very rewarding, and it was very interesting to actually speak with the Producer, writer of the Documentary, Ben Niles, who shared a lot of information about the making of the film, and details that only those that were working on the film could share.

I urge you to see this documentary, and take your young ones to see it. better yet, go on the internet and buy your own copy, or several, and donate them to libraries,and see the devotion and work ethic that the Steinway workers have that enables them to produce the Stradivarius of pianos.. True treasures, and these instruments enable the finest virtuosos to send their souls soaring, and move millions of listeners to the Gods with the joy of music. As well as a beginning piano student to develop their best capabilities, either in practise at home, or in their first recital...

Let us hold the sacred hope that Steinway will always be as it is, and that they will not be tempted as the others have been. I feel there is hope in America as long as we have this treasure, showing others the Way... AND remember it's MADE IN AMERICA. Go enjoy the best!

L1037 is part of the lineup of Artists Instruments, and resides at Steinway and Sons on 57th Street, in the Artists Room, where they choose the Pianos for their New York concerts. Steinway may send Major Artists two or three to the concert, so the stressful night of the concert will be more relaxed, and there is a choice. Usually there will be a master tecnician in case of a last minute adjustment.

WORD FROM TEDDY CHARLES , Vibist.
En route to the Netherlands, my friend of many years, Teddy Charles, called on the cell to tell me he had left his home on Long Island for Europe. A Concert tour of Paris, and the Netherlands,including the most prestigious Jazz Festival in Europe, had materialised, and he and his trusty Deagan vibes were on their way to set the world on fire again! With him are his hand picked Band from NY.

There is a tremendous interest in his music, and he has been in the Studios in NY recording a lot. He even recorded with Teo Macero a couple of weeks before Macero died.TC is a brilliant genius, and founder along with Mingus of the Avant Garde Jazz Movement in the world. Changed Jazz FOREVER. Changed the way we think of our instruments, and ourselves.

My group "Suezenne Fordhm Chamber JazzL is directly inspired by Teddy, as he was a close friend and teacher, helping me to clear my ears and see beyond what the others were doing...In addition toVibes, he played piano, and in return for Vibes and harmony lessons, I gave him lessons in piano tecnic, as I was a student at the time at the Juilliard, and had some great chops.{still do.}

A cat with a terrific sense of humor, and delving mind into all things intellectual, he was for many years the owner of the Schooner "The Mary E" until his real love, music called him back. He sold her, and gave his s0ul to his music wholeheartedly again, though the "business" of music Bugs him [still.]

Godspeed, Old Friend, and in spite of your fears, this is NOT the end,you'll be safe, it is just the beginning.

Last night's concert at the South Pasadena Main Library Concert Hall was a huge success, with a very astute audience, including MXMitacek, composer, mentor and friend of SFCJLA.

Compositions included: MXM's 9 for S, written for Suezenne Fordham, Blue in Green of Miles Davis, Mozart Sonata in a minor, So What, Israel, and various Bill Evans tunes... Interspersed was some pretty spacey Improve utilising Tibetan instruments. The audience loved the evening, and the seccond show was devoted to new compositions, their prepping and go-thrus, showing the observers the makings of the head arrangements... Vey rewarding. caaisy Turbin did some great playing on Alto sax, Round Midnight, Rochelle Coatney knocked everyone out when she played drumset, and Charlie Domingo showed just how beautiful his bass cound sound not only Pizzicato, but eleguently BOWING... Fabulous work, Chasman.

A mere nine measures is the content of the composition written for the Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz LA group. The basic melodic and harmonic structure is written, and the group extends and improvises extensively, creating variation after variation. It sometime rivals extended compositions in the Classical world, in intensity and inovation, truly an improvisors dream.

MXM uses the Equal Interval system of composition as created by Lyle "Spud" Murphy, and taught by MXM at Pasadena City College.

A very soulful and melodic Spiritual in the most traditional sense, with traditional chamnes of harmony, but yet showing the melodic genius that flows from Bradford's pen.

Written during an intense period of soul searching by Bradford, this is a standby for The Bobby Bradford Mo'Tet, and me performance would be complete of Bradford's without this tune. Once again presented to SFCJLA with just twelve measures written, it is a field day for us, recreating all the pain of existance for you to hear and identify with. Intimate,Soulful, Pain ridden with the b5s and we have a ball delving into the psyche of composer Bradford.

The remainder of the program will be devoted to Monk, Evans, Mingus and Asian Improvisations on Tibetan Instruments.

Sent to me by the first Bassist with my LA group, Roberto Miranda, Noah arrived at the door of my studio begging for a chance to play with my Avant Garde Trio, Noah was a knock- kneed kid with a toothy grin, and chops that wouldn't quit.His first gig with the group was so difficult his fingers bled, as he was a student at UCLA, and wasn't prepared with adequate callouses to endure strenuous playing fo extended periods of time Of course he had BIG EARS, and a heart to match.. He was with my Trio for four years, wending his way into my psyche and being. A very intuitive player, he had the uncanny ability to read my mind musically and personally.He eventually left for the Jazz Life in New York.[Brooklyn.] I am hoping he will freeze his buns off, and return to LA,to rejoin SFCJLA....He was actually my Scotty La Faro...Awsome Dude.

The one Bassist who literally changed the entire way of playing Jazz on the Contrabass, using the Bow with a scrupulous Classical tecnique, and Bowing genius. When he first arrived in NY at the Embers on E 64th Street, he was fresh out of Northwstern University in Chicago, and the more knowledgable musicians in town were knocked out, He had the ultimate career in NY, all the best Jazz gigs, sometimes playing with the NY Philharmonic when their Bass section couldn't get horrifically difficult passages together on compositions by Stockhausen, Varese, or Stravinsky. Richard was my FIRST Bassist in forming a duo and Trio in NY, At one point we even had a DUO with just Contrabass and Vibes.. I LOVED his Contrabass, which was a majestic instrument with a carved wood Lion's Head as the scroll. He now is the head of the String Dept at the University of Wisconson in Madison, and in very active in Human Rights movements... The Consumate Musician, Friend and Humanitarian.

On October 5th, 08 Sunday evening at the Chamber Concert Hall of the South Pasadena Main Library, the Suezrenne Fordham Chamber Concert LA Perfprming Ensemble played their first concert of the 08 09 season to a capacity crowd and enthusiatic audience.

There were full houses for both shows, and the group felt very rewarded for their musical efforts.

"The new series, "New Orbits", is an explorationn of the formalism of Classical Chamber Music, and the improvisational Freeform of Avant Garde Jazz, fusing Fourth Stream Avant garde, and Classical forms into a new Music, enhanced with Tibetan Percussion. Truly the intensity of the Concert Experience with Jazz Passion," Suezenne Fordham, founder, pianist and composer-arranger, performer enthused.

The South Pasadena venue is a very historic venue, very hip, and comfortable...At intermission the audience was invited to get to know the Tibetan instruments hands on. The 08 09 season has a series of fourteen concerts spread evenly between the South Pasaden Venue and Steinway Hall at Field's Pianos in West LA.

YEAH, NOAH

Got another call from Noah this afternoon, and he was going to call Teddy Charles, about getting started as a jazz Contrabass player in NY. Teddy had promised to help him when he arrives in New York... so it was really fantastic to hear Noah's voice, and all the funny little mannerisms he has... I wish him all the best luck with Teddy... as Teddy has heard many CDs that I have sent him with Noah playing. God, I wish I could be there... I really miss New York, and the Music scene there.

And so Noah was going to call TC right after calling me... I hope he was able to get in touch... it will be great for Noah, and great for TC to have a great West Coast player....Noah, I still really miss you. My new players are awsome, BUT!!!I can't tell you how great it was to hear your voice, 'jones.

The December issue of LA Jazz Scene has an in depth three and a half page cover story about Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz LA Trio, with anecdotes about some of Suezenne's great Jazz player friends from the Bop Era in New York. She was a famous pianist-vibes player who toured extensively with her own Trio for Joe Glaser's NY office.
Upon moving to Los Angeles, she formed the Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz LA Trio with Drummer Darren Ross and Bassist Noah Garabedian. They perform 20 Concerts per season.
The Trio is a fusion of Avant Garde, Bop, Classical, and Tibetan sounds. Ensemble plays Tibetan Instruments. “The concert experience with Jazz Passion." Venues are chosen with the major criteria of exquisite Concert Grand Pianos.{ mostly Steinways.} Ambience is hp, arty, historic, elegant, and casual. Miss Fordham will be playing the Horowitz Steinway [on tour] Concert Grand which was Horowitz' personal and touring piano since 1946. This is the piano that Horowitz used on his last tour of the Soviet Union. Coincidentally, it is the same piano that Miss Fordham heard while going to visit William Kapell when she first moved to NY [at the request of Kapell]. They remained friends til his death in a plane crash [at Half Moon Bay San Fran.]at age 31. Horowitz lived two Brownstone houses to the west of Kapell, and could be heard clearly from the street by passersby. Also of interest, Ania Dorfman lived two buildings East of Kapell. Dorfman later became Fordham's teacher and mentor for a period of time. Horowitz, Kapell and Dorfman were all Steinway Artists. Poet Laureate Al Young Displays Power In Grand Style

April 27, 2007 was indeed a very special day in South Pasadena. A welcoming reception was held in the Library Community Room for Poet laureate Al Young at 4:00 p.m. City Councilman Mike Ten presented the Proclamation declaring ‘Al Young Day,’ Scott Feldmann, the Executive Director of the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce offered a certificate of recognition, and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library supplied refreshments. Mr. Young’s address outlined the backdrop to his appointment by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2005, and included tidbits about the nomination and approval processes. He also described some of his duties traveling as a literary ambassador around the Golden State.

Mary Fitzpatrick, an adult Pasadena-based poet, shared her recent award-winning poem “The Awakening” that first appeared in the Fall/Winter issue of Atlanta Review. The poem recalls Mary’s encounters with Viola B. Sirolos, a South Pasadena Public Library Children’s Librarian who inspired her as a youthful Summer Reading Program participant.

The Library and the Friends presented an Author Night with Mr. Young at 7:00 p.m. Also showcased was the Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz ensemble which provided expert backing to Mr. Young’s readings. The full house of more than 150 enthusiastically cheered, clapped, and sang along to the improvisational performance. Suezenne, an empathetic and spontaneous pianist, was ably supported by Noah Garabedian on bass, Don Littleton on drums, and Akemi Uchiyama on congas. Their fluid backing added florid backdrops to the lyrical poems.

Wearing a necktie emblazoned with illustrations of phonograph records given to him by the Library, Mr. Young read many selections from his latest book Coastal Nights and Inland Afternoons (Angel City Press, 2006), his first collection since his appointment as Poet Laureate. One of them, “Hot October,” about a wildfire, was dedicated to Suezenne who had rushed from her house in Sunland to play for the concert while a blaze spread within a quarter of a mile from her home.

The band played such classic tunes as Miles Davis’s “So What” and “All Blues” and “Five” by Bill Evans as backing to Al’s readings. The Poet Laurate’s vocal talents were in full evidence as he sang “All the Things You Are.” The performers even collaborated for “Blue Moon.,” a lighthearted Doo Wop tune.

Mr. Young also shared a few selections from a few of his older books which number more than 20 titles. Interspersed were several warm, humorous explanatory tales, including an unforgettable story about the very few English language words that rhyme with “love.” Throughout the event, Al gracefully hit one literary home run after another, stunning round-trippers that delighted the crowd.

Photographers from the South Pasadena Review and LA Jazz maneuvered amongst the lively audience, as did Naomi Okayama, a film documentarist from Japan. Ben McBain, a talk show host from Time Warner, also interviewed Mr. Young before the event for a segment to be aired around Southern California.

Al Young, California State Poet Laureate to Appear at the South Pasadena Library

The South Pasadena Public Library and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library are proud to present California State Poet Laureate Al Young for a free, fun Author Night Program on April 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street. This will be Mr. Young's first appearance after his California State Library sponsored "Top to Bottom" tour of the of the Golden State's outlying rural areas. It will also be his only public reading during his trip to Southern California, although he will be a panelist at the Los Angeles Times Book Fair the next day. No tickets are necessary and during April, a display of many of Al Young's books can be seen at the Library.

Mr. Young's impressive literary record includes novels, poetry, essays, memoirs, and anthologies. He has been a poet, writer, teacher, and lecturer throughout his storied literary career. As a screenwriter Young has worked with Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor. His book Bodies and Soul: Musical Memoirs won the American Book Award in 1981. His latest is the recently published Coastal Nights and Inland Afternoons.

In March 2005, a panel of literary experts convened to review the 26 finalists for the position of California Poet Laureate. Three final names were forwarded to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who appointed Al Young as Poet Laureate. "He is an educator and a man with a passion for the Arts. His remarkable talent and sense of mission to bring poetry into the lives of Californians is an inspiration," said Governor Schwarzenegger. The California Poet Laureate's role is to publicize the art of poetry and encourage literacy and learning in the state.

Al Young of Berkeley is well known for his distinctive style and performances with jazz artists, so it should come as no surprise that a topnotch combo, the Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz Piano Trio, will be opening the show with their distinctive musical stylings. The group also includes Noah Garabedian, contrabass, and Darren Ross, drums and percussion, and will be backing Mr. Young's readings as well. All three musicians play Tibetan percussion instruments. Coincidentally, April is both National Poetry Month and National Jazz Month.

The program is also sponsored by Poets & Writers, Inc . with funding from the James Irvine Foundation. Special thanks to Artists' Inn and California Arts Council.

Pianist, Suezenne Marie Fordham. Born in Wichita, Kansas, USA in 1931 to well known Kansas band leader Howard Fordham and wife Opal Snyder.

Fordham came to New York City in 1949 at the suggestion of her friend,William Kapell, to study classical music with his first teacher, Dorothea Anderson La Follette,and then to the Juilliard to study with Rosina Lhevine(briefly) Beverige Webster,and Josef Raieff...then privately with Ania Dorfman and Robert Goldsand.

It is interesting to note that Goldsand's teachers can be traced directly to Franz Liszt. Goldsand passed down Liszt's superb fingering for double thirds to some of his favorits disciples, Fordham included.

To pay her expenses,she joined the Hatcheck Girls Union and worked as such at the Embers in New York,after being hired to work at the famous Birdland on Broadway, named after Charlie Parker, the Saxophone Legend.

She was "discovered" while practising one afternoon on the Embers superb Steinway Concert"B"Grand Piano by Walter Winchell,NY Columnist, and became famous in the 50's and 60's as Suezenne, the "Cinderella Girl," as Winchell called her in his column, also Irv Kupcinet, Kilgallen, and virtually all columnists and newspsper writers,and music critics in NY, Chicago and Miami.Was written up by Leonard Feather for playing Bach Fugues in a prominant Jazz club(Embers)in Dowmbeat magazine.She was signed and toured extensively for Jos Glaser's Associated Booking Corp.the top agency at the time.

Written about daily in the gossip columns. Played on Radio and TV shows such as Jack Paar's show out of New York in the 1950's. Joined the Merchant Marines in order to tour the Caribbean with her group the "Suezenne Fordham Trio" for several years aboard the S.S. Brazil.She studied Jazz piano with Lennie Tristano, Bill Evans, and at times with George Shearing (he toured a lot)

At the Embers, she played opposite Dorothy Donegan, Red Norvo,Joey Bushkin, George Shearing (with Cal Tjader, Toots Thielmans,Kenny Clarke,John Levy,)Errol Garner, Barbara Carroll,Artie Shaw,Tal Farlow,Alex Kallao,and Johnny Smith at the Embers in New York City ,and opposite Count Basie and Mort Sahl at the Sahara in Las Vegas, also the Haymarket at the Conrad Hilton in Chicago, the Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale,and Versailles and Fontainbleau in Miami.

She played many years at the Hickory House on 52nd St,NY opposite Marian McPartland,Toshiko Akiyoshi,Juta Hipp,Joe Castro,Billy Taylor and Bobby Scottand played piano and was a Chanteuse at many Park Avenue Hotels, including the Doral,Tuscany, Park Sheraton. (doing NBC's Monitor remote live performances) As Chanteuse, she sang in English. German, French and Italian.

Due to her superior piano tecnic, she was sought out by Gerry Mulligan, Milt Jackson Teddy Charles, and Cal Tjader(among others) for coaching.She was friends with many of Jazzdom's greatest.At that time, NY was a tight knit famly of "in" players, and she always encouraged her friends to accomplish more through positive energy and setting examples with her own highest standards, inspiring higher levels of artistic accomplishment in all who knew her.This still holds true.

Under contract to Columbia Records in the 50's with her famous bassist [Richard Davis].She unknowingly signed a recording contract which was renewed every year but never recorded due to the recording company wanting to keep her out of competition with their star Dave Grushin.She eventually was able to disencumber herself from Columbia(Epic).

Her drummers included Ray Mosca, Roger Wanderscheid,Bud Neeley and others. She also studied vibes privately with Milt Jackson and Teddy Charles.At times her bassist was Teddy Kotik, (Parker's Bassist.

In the late 60's-70's she formed two new progressive jazz groups, "Third Eye" and "70" with Bill Folwell,Bass; Bob Fritz,Electric Clarinet;and Ray Manning.Drums and percussion.

In Los Angeles in 2002, Fordham created Suezenne Fordham Chamber Jazz in Historic Sites Series "The Art of the Chamber Jazz Piano Trio."

The group plays Jazz Fusion, Avant Garde,with Bartok and Messian influences.She plays Steinway Piano, Percussion, Melodian, Chakra Bowls,Singing Bowls and Gongs.(Tibetan Percussion )Drummer is Darren Ross,who is a Jazz virtuoso has been with the Trio since it's inception;and Supra talented Noah Garabedian is Contrabassist for their Series. replacing Roberto Miranda.There are around 20 concerts per season.

It is their commitment to evolving new and exciting sounds that propel the Trio into vast new areas, sometimes adding Jazz Tuba Player Bill Roper, who is a superb Jazz player Avant Gardist.(think French Horn, not um pah pah!!)

She is the recent recipient of the distinguished EIS Award for composing and promoting the Equal Interval System by Spud Murphy, and realised by MXMitacek, and includes compositions by two of her mentors, Bobby Bradford, and MXMITACEK. The Trio has just been inducted into Chamber Music America, and looks forward to a long and fruitful relationship,involving extensive composing and expanding their number of seasonal concerts.
